20 Oct 2025

RCN Yorkshire & the Humber Board member Joan Pons Laplana recognised at the 2025 BAME Awards.

Held at the end of September in central London, the 2025 National National Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Health & Care Awards are an important platform for driving systemic change in health and social care. Its mission is to amplify voices, challenge inequalities, and inspire action towards a future where equity and inclusion are at the heart of healthcare.

Now in its 6th year, the Awards honour the individuals, teams, and organisations breaking barriers and building more inclusive systems—from ward to boardroom.

RCN Yorkshire & the Humber Board member and NHS Choices College Area Manager for NHS England, Joan Pons Laplana was awarded ‘Ally of the Year’ 2025.

The judges highlighted that Joan used his “lived experience as a platform for authenticity, building initiatives that support both patients and colleagues. Confronting stigma head-on, educating peers and sparking cultural change with honesty and resilience”.

They also commended his "creativity, courage, and tireless advocacy in improving professional pathways and inclusive practice”.

RCN Regional Director for RCN Yorkshire & the Humber Sarah Dodsworth said

“Joan’s work is a shining example. He has shown a tireless commitment to breaking down barriers and building a sector where everyone feels seen, valued and heard.

“We are incredibly proud of his achievement and offer our warmest congratulations on being recognised for his work and this well-deserved national award.”

Joan (pictured above with RCN President Bejoy Sebastian) was born in Barcelona in 1975. He trained as a nurse in Spain and graduated in 1997. He is an NHS leader and RCN activist, currently living and working in South Yorkshire. As part of his role as a Yorkshire & the Humber Board member, Joan is leading on establishing a member-led neurodiversity group.
