Applications are now open to join the Mental Health Forum Steering Committee, and I would encourage anyone who is passionate about mental health nursing having a voice to consider applying.
When I first saw the Mental Health Forum vacancies advertised, I was not entirely sure what the role involved. I knew the RCN played an influential role in representing the voice of mental health nursing, and I knew that ensuring mental health nursing had a strong voice was important to me. Mental health nursing can often be a hidden profession, and even within healthcare there is not always a full understanding of the role and its impact. Throughout my career, this has driven me to advocate for mental health nursing and to ensure that people recognise the benefits and importance of having mental health nurses involved in decision-making at every level. With this in mind, I submitted an application and was delighted to be successful at interview.
As a Steering Committee member, I have had opportunities to contribute to reviews of legislation, promote mental health nursing with government leaders, and take part in consultations on issues that directly affect nursing care. Importantly, all of this work has been informed by listening to Forum members and ensuring their views are represented. The role has also supported my own professional development. It has given me valuable insight into how change can be influenced within large organisations, and I have been able to apply this learning to support high-quality patient care throughout my nursing career.
One of my proudest achievements as a Steering Committee member was supporting the publication of the RCN position statement on the protection of the four fields of nursing. This work helps mental health nurses advocate for field identity, specialist education, and role protection. While there is still more to do to ensure mental health nursing is recognised and protected as a distinct and unique specialty, this was an important step in the right direction.
One message that has consistently come through from members is the importance of engagement and involvement. If you have ideas about how we can strengthen connections with Forum members and ensure their voices continue to shape our work, I would strongly encourage you to apply. Other qualities that are valuable in this role include a commitment to advocating for the nursing workforce, the ability to build professional networks, and an interest in keeping up to date with developments across mental health nursing.
If you are considering applying, the RCN has produced helpful guidance on the application process. Current Steering Committee members would also be happy to discuss the role and answer any questions you may have. Contact details can be found on the Forum webpage.
I have found the experience incredibly rewarding, both professionally and personally, and I would encourage anyone with a passion for mental health nursing and its future to put themselves forward.
